Currently, there are two broad categories of mediators in South Africa, namely statutory and private mediators. Statutory mediators are appointed in terms of legislation, such as court-annexed mediators, whilst private mediators are appointed outside of any legislative framework. Social Justice offers accredited mediation training to both categories.
1. Court-annexed mediators must attend a 40-hour contact mediation training course. The course content must comply with the requirements laid down by the Court-annexed Mediation Rules.
For Training Courses as Court-annexed Mediators, see training dates under 2.(a)(i) below.
The Divorce & Family Mediation Training course is the most comprehensive training available for court-annexed mediators. It must be borne in mind that the greatest majority of court-referred mediations are family-related. Therefore training as a Civil / Commercial mediator will limit the scope of court-annexed mediators, because of the specialized nature of family matters.
2. Private mediators who wish to be accredited under the umbrella of DiSAC, NABFAM and SARJAB must comply with the requirements of these governing bodies.
